Sadly, of all the things I've learnt over the past two weeks (people speaking in Russian always sound fatalistic, even if crowd reaction indicates they're telling a funny story; when in Canada, try to find an Aussie or a Kiwi to make your coffee; half an hour in Montreal will prove to you how far we are away from being a bilingual country) the origin of the red pin has not revealed itself ....
Oh well. I posted your question and a link back the day one of my entries got linked to by Tyler Green - I though someone may have solved it from that. All those facts above ARE interesting though.
