A year-long feasibility study, commissioned by the City of Helsinki and done by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, has concluded that yes, building a Guggenheim Museum in Finland would aid Helsinki in its efforts to become a cultural capital.
Which makes me think - why Te Papa North? Why not Guggenheim South?

In the end it seems to be the usual - "damned if you do, damned if you don't". Auckland complains the national collections are too far away, yet when you offer them to bring them closer, they start complaining again.
The thing with cultural objects is many of them are unique, so as far as objects go, you aren't really in direct competition with other museums/art galleries. Though I guess there could be some competition in the 'experience' game.
If Auckland wanted to be more hipster, they could use Wynyard Pt for 'pop-up' museums. Then each month there could be a different museum there - Auckland, Te Papa, Guggenheim...
